In 1920, Dickson, a cotton buyer in the purchasing department of Johnson & Johnson, laid a strip of surgical tape on a table, adhesive side up. He then stuck small pads of gauze at intervals along the tape Finally,he covered the sticky side of the tape with crinoline, a stiff, cotton fabric usually used as a liner in clothing. Whenever his wife needed a bandage, she simply cut a piece from the convenient roll of tape.
Dickson mentioned his invention to a fellow worker at Johnson & Johnson, who encouraged him to pitch his idea to upper management. Dickson later recalled,"The boys in the front office loved the concept." James W. Johnson, then president of the company, was one of those who recognized the potential of adhesive bandages for the care of minor wounds and enthusiastically endorsed the idea. W. Johnson Kenyon, superintendent of the textile mill at Johnson & Johnson, is credited with suggesting the name Band-Aid. Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages eventually became the- best-selling product in Johnson & Johnson history. Dickson was rewarded by being named a vice president and member of the- board of directors. He retired in 1957 and died in-1962.
