Granular pesticides (pest control) overcome the disadvantages of dust pesticide in their handling characteristics. The granules are small pellets formed from various inert clays and sprayed with a hot oil solution of the toxicant to give the desired content. After the solvent has evaporated, the granules are packaged for use. Granular materials range in size from 20 to 80 mesh, which refers to the number of grids per linear inch of screen through which they will pass. Only insecticides, and a few herbicides, are formulated as granules. They range from 1% to 15% active ingredient, including some systemic insecticides as granules available for garden, lawn, and ornamentals. Granular materials may be applied at virtually any time of day in winds up to 20 mph without problems of drift, an impossible task with sprays or dusts. They also lend themselves to soil application in the drill at planting time to protect the roots from insects or to introduce a systemic to the roots for transport to above-ground parts in certain garden vegetables, lawns, and ornamentals.
